Vanilla server megathread

Post by knutremi » Wed Oct 15, 2014 12:23 pm

Let's make our vanilla server as awesome as it can be. Not through one huge effort, but through small things here and there.

Reply with your general thoughts, tips, ideas, concerns and suggestions here and discuss what others have said. Every time something's decided, let's carry it out, and make the vanilla server better and better! :D

Any operator with protection system competence is required to train other operators to install the protection system when requested. Anyone who are able to install the protection system are required to install it correctly upon request. Modmins get to decide what it means to install the protection system correctly.

Reason: Removed MOTD and vanish from poll and added the clock, teasers, Wilderness 2, pets and promote/demote to the poll

Well, do you mean Vanilla as in plain minecraft, or Vanilla as in plain minecraft?

Hmm, that doesn't come across very well, what i mean to say is do we want Mojang's vanilla, or are we also interested in other routes? (like custom server software that gives a close-to-vanilla experience?)

Because, and i know i keep moaning about this, i still feel like we should run MCServer, and while that has plugins etc, its actually fairly close to Vanilla, and it sure as hell runs better then actual Vanilla (or bukkit, or sponge, or whatever java crap)

So thats my general thought, tip, and idea, MCServer.

Obviously I meant our vanilla server. We only have one vanilla server and that's this one: http://ae-c.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1922

I'm aware that MCServer's experience (with plugins, not mods) is considered vanilla MCServer. But it's not vanilla Minecraft and doesn't aim to emulate Minecraft perfectly.

I consider moving our vanilla minecraft server to another host an option. But I have never considered shutting it down and I won't let that happen. For the time being I'm dependent on it for cutting edge vanilla Minecraft features, something I doubt MCServer offers.

Patience. I've said I will eventually set up an MCServer myself. That is, if nobody else sets one up before me. ;)

How does the ranking system work on the vanilla server right now?

I need help from people who are SuperVip or better with the spawn on the vanilla server. Ask an operator to op you if you've got at least SuperVip. If you're multiple people, decide who's better at what and assign parts of the project to the one who's better at it.

We're going to need a spawn building of any kind within the 16x16 spawn protection on the vanilla server. The spawn building must contain a single user control panel of any design. My menu system in the redstone testing area is among the options. The same goes for the portal system at world spawn on our main server. Or a design of your choice. Depending on your design you might have to plan for ways to activate the following:
  • Survival, creative, adventure and spectator mode
  • The promotion/demotion of another user
  • Warp selection
  • Quick access to the wilderness
  • Quick access to your home
  • Other features you might think of
If you're able to implement these features your self, it would be awesome if you did so. But make sure they comply with our regulations and make use of existing systems where possible. If there's something you're not able to implement, don't worry. I can implement it for you.

I figured out that you can use the scoreboard to track mined blocks. There will be credits for mining and you will be able to purchase stuff. I haven't decided entirely on what you'll be able to purchase yet, temporary command access and items are being considered.

I added a poll with some of the things I'm considering adding. Also, other suggestions are welcome as well.

I voted for the MOTD, because even if it's minor I feel like it's pretty important.

I'm gonna need someone to help me demo some of the new vanilla server stuff in a YouTube video. If you've got some time, talk to me on Steam or Skype.

Edit: I've recorded the video now. Xytarez helped. There might be more vids in the near future.
